In the making

From block to finished figure.

    Roughing out

    The figure begins as a block of white marble, cut back with the grinder until its outline stands clear of the stone.

    Marked up

    Pencil lines drawn directly onto the marble set out the cuts to come.

    Reading the stone

    A natural vein runs the length of the block. Stevens chose to keep it, and it was later finished in gold.

    The plinth

    With the figure polished, the marble plinth is squared and drilled to receive it.

    The companion is carved as a separate piece, from marble with a heavier vein.
